An FNSKU (Fulfillment Network Stock Keeping Unit) is the barcode Amazon uses to identify your specific inventory inside its fulfillment network. It's one of the most misunderstood parts of selling on Amazon — sellers mix it up with ASINs and UPCs, apply it wrong, and end up with rejected shipments. FNSKU vs ASIN vs UPC — the difference that trips everyone up

In short: a UPC/EAN is the manufacturer's global barcode used to create a listing. The ASIN is Amazon's ID for that listing, shared by everyone who sells the same product. The FNSKU is unique to you — it ties each physical unit in Amazon's warehouse back to your seller account. Without the right FNSKU, Amazon can't tell your inventory apart from another seller's.

When do you actually need an FNSKU label?

When you set up an FBA listing, Amazon asks how it should identify your units. You choose between two options:

• Amazon barcode (FNSKU) — recommended. Each unit gets your unique FNSKU label. Your inventory is tracked separately and never commingled with other sellers' stock. This is the safe, standard choice for private-label and most resellers.
• Manufacturer barcode (stickerless / commingled). Amazon uses the existing UPC and pools your units with everyone else's identical items. It saves a labeling step, but you lose control over quality — you could ship a perfect unit and a customer receives someone else's damaged one. Most serious sellers avoid this.

If you chose the Amazon barcode option, every unit needs an FNSKU label before it reaches Amazon.

How to generate FNSKU labels

1. In Seller Central, go to your product under Manage Inventory.
2. Select the item and choose Print item labels (or set "Amazon barcode" during FBA conversion).
3. Pick your label size (e.g., 30-up on US Letter, or a thermal roll size).
4. Download the PDF and print on a laser printer or thermal label printer — never inkjet, which smudges and won't scan reliably.

Amazon's FNSKU labeling rules

• One FNSKU per unit, placed on a flat, scannable surface.
• Cover the original barcode. If both the FNSKU and the manufacturer barcode are visible and scannable, the unit can be miscounted or refused.
• Don't wrap it around edges or corners where a scanner can't read it flat.
• Keep it clean and crisp — no smudging, no shrink-wrap glare over the barcode.
• For poly-bagged items, the FNSKU must be scannable on or through the bag.

The 5 most common FNSKU mistakes

1. Leaving the manufacturer barcode showing. The #1 error — always cover it completely.
2. Using the wrong product's FNSKU. Each SKU has its own; mislabeled units get commingled or lost.
3. Blurry or inkjet-printed labels that won't scan at the fulfillment center.
4. Applying labels over a seam or curved surface so the barcode distorts.
5. Reusing an old FNSKU after relisting — always print fresh from the current listing.
