Amazon Ended Its FBA Prep Service in 2026 – Here’s What Sellers Must Do Now

Amazon officially ended its in-house FBA prep services on January 1, 2026 — including labeling, poly-bagging, bubble-wrapping, bundling, taping, and boxing for US shipments. If you relied on Amazon to prep your inventory after it arrived, that safety net is gone. From now on, your products must arrive fully prepped and compliant, or Amazon will reject them, return them at your cost, or dispose of them with no reimbursement.

Here’s exactly what changed, why it matters, and the three options you have going forward.

What Amazon actually changed

Previously, sellers could ship products to Amazon and pay Amazon to apply FNSKU labels, poly-bag loose items, add suffocation warnings, and bundle multipacks. As of January 1, 2026, Amazon no longer offers these services in the US. The change applies across all inbound paths — including AWD, AGL, SEND, and the Supply Chain portal — whenever goods end up in an FBA fulfillment center.

In Amazon’s own words, most sellers already prep their products themselves, through their manufacturer, or through a third-party service provider. So Amazon is stepping out of that role entirely.

Why this matters more than it sounds

Improperly prepped inventory doesn’t just get delayed — it can get you penalized. Unprepped or mislabeled units can be refused at the dock, returned to you at your expense, or in some cases disposed of.

One compliance mistake can wipe out the margin on an entire shipment and tie up your cash flow for weeks.

There’s also the account-health angle. Repeated prep or labeling violations can trigger warnings on your seller account, which is the last thing any serious seller wants.

Your three options now

Now that Amazon has stepped back from prep, sellers have three realistic paths:

Three options for Amazon sellers: prep yourself, ask your supplier, or use a prep center

1. Prep everything yourself. You can follow Amazon’s prep guidelines and do it in-house. This works if you have the space, the labor, and the time — but it pulls you away from sourcing, marketing, and actually growing the business. Most sellers underestimate how long labeling and bagging a few thousand units really takes.

2. Ask your manufacturer or supplier to prep. Some overseas suppliers will apply FNSKU labels and poly-bags before shipping. This can work for simple products, but quality control is hard to enforce from thousands of miles away, and a single labeling error at the source multiplies across your whole shipment.

3. Use a dedicated FBA prep center. A third-party prep center receives your inventory, inspects it, applies FNSKU labels, poly-bags and bundles as needed, and ships it to Amazon fully compliant — usually faster and cheaper per unit than doing it yourself once you factor in your own time. This is now the default choice for most growing sellers.

What to look for in a prep center

Not all prep centers are equal. Before you hand over your inventory, check for:

  • Transparent per-unit pricing with no setup or monthly fees, so you can forecast costs.
  • Fast turnaround — ideally same-day or 1–2 business day dispatch after receiving.
  • A commercial facility with a loading dock and space for pallets and containers, if you buy wholesale or in bulk.
  • Multi-marketplace support — Amazon, Walmart, eBay, Etsy, and Shopify — so you’re covered as you expand.
  • Clear communication so you always know your inventory’s status.
  • A compliance-first process that keeps your inventory and seller account safe.
